Capital
of the homonymous prefecture, the city of Kavala is situated
in Eastern Macedonia at a point of great strategical
importance, on the Egnatia road, which joins Europe to Asia.
Built in amphitheatric shape, beside the azure waters of the
northern Aegean and surrounded by the mountain chain of
Simbolo, Kavala combines the beauties of the mountain with
those of the sea and offers the opportunity of both summer
and winter holidays. The access to the city of Kavala is
easy, by any means of transportation. The new sea – front
highway Strimonas Nea Peramos (Egnatia) provides a
comfortable and safe trip by car. In addition, there are
daily buses to and from Athens and Thessaloniki.
From
the port of Kavala there are connections with the Aegean
islands by liners and ferryboats. From the airport of the
city there are also daily
flights to and from Athens throughout the year, while during
the high season there are daily charters to and from abroad.
Kavala is a modern lively city and offers its visitor many
amenities and a most pleasant stay whatever the season. The
traditional shops in the narrow passages of Agios Nikolaos
give off a scent of the past, while along the busy shopping
Omonia and Venizelou streets one can find all the modern
shops.
The
old town with the castle, Imaret and Kamares, and Kyprou
street with the beautiful neoclassical buildings and the
picturesque port with the small fishing boats, are ideal for
a promenade. At the sea – front fish – taverns you may enjoy
the most delicious local dishes and fresh seafood from the
nearby seas.
